Sustainable Tourism

What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism is defined by the UN Environment Program and UN World Tourism Organization as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

Our Input

As part of our core values at Skylax Safaris, we are passionate about promoting tourism practices that make a positive impact on the environment, society and economy. Doing good by doing well – doing well by doing good.

One of the ways we do this is by promoting and encouraging site visits to local women and youth empowerment projects, The Elephant Orphanage and local rehabilitation centers – we try to incorporate this into the clients’ itineraries.

We also look forward to working with hotels and organizations that share the same values which include, among others:

1. Angama Mara
Each guest gives a USD10 per night donation to the Angama Foundation which goes towards the projects that improve the education, healthcare and conservation of the communities neighboring the lodges.

2. Campi ya Kanzi – Chyulu Hills
This is a community lodge on a community parcel of land which employs locally and supports a community trust. They also apply state of the art technology in the use of renewable resources.

3. Borana – Laikipia
The conservancy strives to retain this land as a pristine wilderness sanctuary that guests can enjoy first hand. They also make savory meals from fresh organic foods from an organic farm and also practice water conservation and regenerative agriculture. They take interested clients for a farm tour during their stay.

4. KarenBlixen Camp
A founding member camp of the Mara North Conservancy which protects the 32,000 ha of the pristine Masai Mara Eco Wilderness. They make use of the latest green technologies which minimize their impact on the environment. They also fundraise for the betterment of the local Maasai community, promote tertiary education for the Maasai youth, women alike and promote HIV/AIDS awareness for all staff employed.

5. Bush and Beyond
A proud member of Ecotourism Kenya who accept their responsibility to protect and enhance the natural and cultural environment of the areas in which they operate. They have educational, conservation and healthcare projects in the areas where their properties are situated in Kenya.
